Dangal is in no mood of slowing down in China and in meantime hits $100mn internationally today, becoming the 1st Indian film to do so. China added $4.3mn to it’s running tally which stands at $98.9mn, just $1.1mn short $100mn. At time of press film crossed $100mn, accounting the Wednesday sales.
China remains the top contributor with $65.4mn gross sales till Tuesday. This is more than any other Indian film’s International come which includes $41.5mn of Baahubali The Conclusion. Film is already three fold of what P.K. did in China in 2015 which is expected to go as high as 6 times. However in all major markets, it is biggest ever in China only and that’s what making big difference.
Dangal’s performance in China presage existence of potential for more business in overseas. A normal Hollywood film earns 2/3rd of its global business outside North America, which is due to the sound marketing of films. A film like Dangal, 3 Idiots, My Name Is Khan or Baahubali can rake in millions from countries like United States, United Kingdom, France, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Australia and so on with well marketed release of International versions. Few years back The Lunchbox grossed $19mn in Overseas, which includes $4.5mn approx from France, $1.8mn in Germany, $725k in Switzerland and so on. Black grossed in excess of $5.5mn in South Korea and continues to perform in re releases which includes $50k Approx this year too. Business is there for films if capped well but for that regular exports are required else these markets remain one or two films wonder only.
