The Mummy looks to scare up Raabta for the Weekend Race to Top

Weekend sees as many as three wide releases, namely The Mummy, Raabta and Behen Hogi Teri. Expectations from the three aren’t much high as far as start is concerned with The Mummy to lead the pack for what looks like another low weekend before the big releases in last weekend of June.

At the top of this weekend’s box office will be the reboot to the Hollywood Horror & Adventure franchise “The Mummy”. Historically films from franchise had performed well in India, especially The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001) with ₹19cr and ₹28cr gross, which adjusted for inflation, stands in north of ₹130cr and ₹160cr respectively. However the recent last film in series The Mummy 3, released back in 2008 wasn’t as big hit as the other two, with ₹24cr gross approx (inflation adjusted ₹50cr). A similar case for reboot of a successful franchise can be made with Jurassic World (2015) which had a ₹32cr opening weekend in India but probably The Mummy isn’t that big of a film. A gap of 9 years or for that matter 16 years from last well performing film will be a factor too as seen in case of Kong Skull Island and Pirates of the Caribbean 5 earlier this year.  On top of that there is a big cricket match on Sunday which will be affecting the course. However trailer of film got a good response and earliest feedbacks for the film are satisfactory. Film’s screening starts today post 3PM across India which will be giving it additional edge over other films. Considering all this coupled with wide release for a foreign film, a ₹24-28cr weekend seems likely.

Shushant Rajput and Kriti Sanon starrer Raabta is looking at a second place finish. So far film has faced mixed to negative response from both audiences and industry; otherwise a bollywood film at this scale is always contender for topping the weekend. Lead stars of film hardly hold any face value which shifts the responsibility of giving a good start to Marketing, Music and Promos. Unfortunately none of the three was able to do anything positive for the film. Industry expectations range from a low ₹20cr to high ₹30cr. Going by the response to film so far, we will be going with the lower limit for a weekend gross of ₹21-22cr. However a lot will depend on word of mouth, if positive could hit that higher limit.

In third place Rajkumar Rao and Shruti Hassan’s Behen Hogi Teri will be relying on that Saturday growth as Friday looks like will be around ₹2.5cr. WOM of film will be the deciding factor for weekend which could settle anywhere between ₹9-13cr. At fourth will be last weekend topper Baahubali The Conclusion adding ₹6cr in its cume which stands at ₹1317.5cr after 6 weeks. It will be seventh consecutive and probably the last weekend for the film in Top 5.  For the fifth place Wonder Woman and Hindi Medium will be having a close call as both will be grossing around ₹4-5cr over weekend.
