Yesterday was a ₹1000cr day for Indian cinema. Baahubali 2 passed the milestone in India while riding on a great WOM in China Dangal pulled it worldwide becoming the 2nd ever to do so.
Starting with Baahubali, it grossed ₹32cr on Saturday in India to take its Cume par ₹1029cr in 16 days. Just a reminder, this is more than double of previous record holder Dangal’s ₹511cr. Rarely records are broken this rate with last one probably being Sholay doing more than 3 times of previous record holder. In meantime film’s global gross now stands at ₹1287cr in striking distance of 1st ₹1300cr global grosser. Speaking in International terms film becomes the 1st to gross $200mn worldwide.
Moving to Dangal it is pulling the unprecedented in China. Film stands at $42.6mn Approx after 9 days in neighbouring country which is enough to make it 2nd ₹1000cr film for India. For those interested in region wise breakup.

- Middle East : ₹60cr or $8.9mn
- Far East : ₹295cr or $45.75mn

- Europe and Rest : ₹31cr or $4.6mn
Film international Cume stands at $76.25mn or ₹500cr which will soon cross that $100mn milestone. Film might challenge the worldwide gross of Baahubali 2 if it manage to gross around $90mn more in China as Baahubali is expected to earn around ₹1550-1600cr gross worldwide at end of it’s run.
Unfortunately the gross in China is coming but will hardly make any difference to the prospects off Disney as film was sold at outright $1mn Approx to Chinese distributor. Had it been a release in international import model they would have got higher revenue in range of 20% of gross or so. But then quite possibly collection wouldn’t be that high too. All this might be door opening for future Indian films but for that regular exports need to be done. Later in year Tubelight and Baahubali The Conclusion releases in China.
